RECKLESS drivers who ignore warning signs along a road between Staverton and Holt could be a thing of the past after plans were put in motion to install flood gates there.

Trowbridge station manager Andy Greene gave a presentation to the Bradford on Avon Area Board calling for floodgates to be installed along the B3106 as drivers routinely ignore the flashing flood warning signs or skirt round the cones placed there.

Cllr Jim Lynch was completely behind the initiative and he now is leading the effort to get floodgates on either side of the B3106 but also before the bridge by the Cereal Partners site and at Forewords Common crossroads along the B3105.

“The emergency services put their lives at risk for us even when people ignore the signs and get trapped in flood water. By pushing forward on this, we can make sure they don’t need to do that with the flooding problems here,” said Cllr Lynch.

“It should cost £20,000-25,000, which in the grand scheme of things is not a lot when this has caused so much trouble for so many years.

“We will consult with the Environment Agency, Wiltshire Council and others to get this done.”
