Vintage vehicle rally attracts more than 1,000

More than 1,000 people packed into a field near Southwick over the Bank Holiday weekend for a vintage vehicle rally.

It was the 36th annual Selwood Steam and Vintage Vehicle Preservation Society’s Rally and the eighth year it has taken place in Southwick.

The busiest day was Sunday, when more than 600 people visited the site and the organisers were pleased with the turnout following a few years of bad weather.

Organiser Steve Francis said: “It all went very well, it was one of the best rallies we’ve had for years.

“The weather has been good to us and the crowds have turned out in quite high numbers.

“The last three or four years have been atrocious, so we deserve to have a really good weekend this year!

“The most popular thing this year seems to be bringing steam back.

“We have three different steam rides this year and it does seem to make a difference.”

Visitors could take a trip on a trailer pulled by a steam tractor, or see a full size steam roller going about the ring or even have a ride on a narrow gauge steam railway engine.

Mike and Sarah Doddington, from Westbury, said: “We used to organise an event like this in Neston but we’ve never been to this site before. It’s very good actually.

“Very often you don’t get live steam at small rallies, so it’s nice to see.”

Andrew and Tony Brazier brought their children Masie and Jack along with their friends Steve Laurence and his son Sam.

Mr Brazier said: “I came on Saturday with the kids and I enjoyed it so much I brought the rest of the family back on Monday to see it again.

“Our two-year-old son Jack loves tractors so he really enjoyed having a ride on the trailer pulled by the steam tractor.”

His wife said: “We would certainly come back again, it’s just a lovely quaint day out.”

Sam Laurence added: “It’s really nice and peaceful and it’s interesting to learn about all the engines going round and round the ring.”
