Wood mice and a water vole were among the small mammals caught during a wildlife survey in Biss Meadows Country Park in Trowbridge on Saturday.

Members of the Friends of Biss Meadows and Trowbridge Watch group joined forces to conduct the survey, with the results due to be sent to Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Children attending the event got the chance to see the animals close-up and identify them.

Other species thought to inhabit the country park include otters and water shrews.

Friends chairman Jacky Good said: “We had 20 people in total come along.

“We had set down longworth traps, which had some food and hay in them to keep the animals comfortable.

“There hasn’t been a survey of Biss Meadows since 2006. It’s good to build up a wildlife picture.”

Anyone who wants to join the Friends should email Jacky on chair@bissmeadows.org.uk or visit www.bissmeadows.org.uk

Last week, when dog walking in Biss Meadows, we came across a whole (unfortunately dead) mole. Such black soft, velvet like fur, amazingly large front paws.
Then on tuesday saw a large snake basking in the sun until it saw us.

AND the signets and baby moorhens. I do hope the Seagulls don't get them.

I think Trowbridge is an amazing town to have such wildlife areas through out the estates. Perhaps this should be our target and call to fame as a wild life Town?

Didn't this amenity used to be called Longfield Nature Park? And before that, Blackball Hatches? It is a valuable asset to Trowbridge people whatever it's called.
