PUPILS at St John’s Church of England Primary School in Warminster will have their art featured in a display at the National Gallery.

The exhibition is part of the National Gallery’s flagship scheme for primary schools, Take One Picture, which invites teachers and pupils to take inspiration from work in its collection.

This year, the chosen painting is Still Life with Drinking Horn by 17th century artist Willem Kalf.

More than 46,500 children have taken part in the project and St John’s was the only school in Wiltshire to get involved. The pupils’ work will feature as part of a slideshow of outstanding work from 30 schools, to go alongside the main display.

Headteacher Lyn Taylor said: “One of the main things about the project is how we presented the picture to the children. We hired an amateur actor and set a room up like it would look in the 17th century.

“The children had a print of the picture and were asked to investigate it and come up with their own interpretations. Due to the way we presented it, the children were really keen to get involved.

“We had really interesting pieces, with some of the children focusing on the individual items in the picture, such as the lemon or the lobster, while the little ones did a diorama of a sea scene.”

Year 2 pupils will visit the London gallery’s exhibition, which opens on June 12 and runs until September 22.
