Exhibitions and trench suppers are just some of the events planned by Warminster Town Council to commemorate the First World War after it scooped a grant of £36,800.

The Our Heritage grant will enable the town council to create a four-year project, which will include a junior memorial service and the recording of family memories, documents, photographs and wartime memorabilia.

Finds days, where people can bring in artefacts, will also be held, as well as trench suppers, where school children experience what food was like for Warminster soldiers.

Volunteers and participants will include senior and primary school children, cadets, veterans, the British Legion and town council volunteers.

Veronica Mills, administration officer at the town council, said: “We are delighted that the funding has been approved.

“The whole point of the project is it is specifically about Warminster and Warminster people and families.

“The exhibition that we held from August 14-22 demonstrated how much interest there is in local people.

“People found it very moving. The comments that we received from visitors prove how important it is to local people to keep the memories of people involved in the First World War alive.”

The exhibition will be repeated to allow school children to be involved, and oral history training will be provided for Year Nine children to make audio recordings of relatives’ war stories.

Information about the 500 men from Warminster and its surrounding villages who served and died and research into the wartime buildings will also be collated.

All information will be used to create a contemporary portable heritage resource in the form of touchscreen units in schools, the Civic Centre and on tour at key venues and events in Warminster and its surrounding villages.

These will feature documentary-style clips, audio recordings, a memorial gallery and a database containing extensive information about and photographs of the 500 soldiers.

It will also be supported by touch boxes containing replica items and documents.
