WARMINSTER mum Zoe Spittal is determined to the find the callous hit-and-run driver that almost killed her 18-month-old son who was only saved thanks to the quick reactions of her friend.

Miss Spittal’s son, Tao, was being pushed in his pram by her friend Elizabeth Turner across Sambourne Road crossing, near Emwell Street, when she was struck by a dark blue car coming down the hill.

Mrs Turner managed to push the pram out of harm’s way and Tao suffering no injuries, despite his pram flipping over. She suffered bruised legs and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Mrs Turner, 34, of Vicarage Street, Warminster, who was looking after Tao for the afternoon and was on her way to the park, said: “I was about half way across and then this car, which was going too quick, hit me.

“I managed to push the pram out of the way but it just caught me on my leg and I fell to the floor

“I was just shocked when it happened, I couldn’t believe that this happened.

“I’m furious that despite hitting me, they couldn’t be bothered to stop, they just beeped their horn and kept driving.”

Now Miss Spittal, 36, of Primrose Walk, Warminster, and a carer in Longbridge Deverill, is determined to find the driver who did not stop at the scene and drove off in the direction of Silver Street after the incident at 2.35pm on March 3.

She said: “When I found out I was really shocked, I got a phone call when I was at work and I immediately went into panic but then I was told everyone was okay so I calmed down a bit.

“I was horrified that anyone would be that heartless to hit somebody and not stop, it’s just disgusting.

“Tao was traumatised afterwards he was crying for a long time, then he went to sleep but when he woke up I think he was still in a little shock as he was definitely very unsettled but he’s got back to normal now.”

The two friends also believe more needs to be done to slow cars down coming into Warminster on Sambourne Road.

“I know other people who have been hit on this crossing by speeding cars, sometimes by drivers who have been drinking, and they need to put cameras up to catch these people," added Miss Spittal.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Anyone who may have been in the area at the time and saw this incident is asked to contact us immediately on 101.

“Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously if preferred.”
