AN ebook offering advice on how to perform basic tasks such as fixing a bike puncture or sewing on a button has been released by Warminster blogger Jen Gale.

Released last week, Make Do and Mend-able: Back to Basics features 19 chapters of useful money-saving tips for every home to help people save money.

Taking nearly 12 months to put together, the book was the idea of Mrs Gale went a whole year without buying anything new and blogged about her mission.

The mum-of-two from Hillwood Lane said: “I read somewhere recently that the most common cause of people throwing out clothes is because a button comes off. I think everyone should know how to sew on a button, but I remember a time when I didn’t know how to do it."

“Not everyone will want to learn to knit though so the book is as broad and accessible as possible with step-by-step instructions.”

Featuring contributions from fellow bloggers and experienced makers and menders, it is the perfect tool for beginners and also offers eight projects for those more experienced and wanting to try something a bit more challenging, such as how to deconstruct a garment and make something new from it.

“There are projects on how to deconstruct a garment and remake something new from it, something which requires more skill,” said Mrs Gale, who recently became World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Community Champion for her blog.

“There is stuff in the book that I haven’t done before that I’m keen to try, like knitting.

“I think the book would be ideal for a student leaving home for the first time and is a modern take on household tasks.

“I did a giveaway on the blog before the book was released and handed out about ten copies to people and I’ve got a few of those reviews back and generally people have liked it and been really supportive.”

And despite it only being released in the past week,

And Mrs Gale already has plans in the pipeline for future books.

She said: “I want to do a series, such as looking at how to do a wedding or Christmas on a budget.” she added.

“Obviously it depends on finance and things but I have a series of them lined up in my head.”
