MATRAVERS School has received an Ofsted rating of good following its latest inspection that left some parents angry, after they claimed the school were trying to hide children with learning disabilities during the visit.

Inspections at the school on Springfield Road took place on February 5 and 6 as well as April 14, with inspectors rating the Westbury school as good in all areas and improved from its previous rating of requires improvement.

At the time of the February inspections some parents claimed they were told to send their children who had learning difficulties or behavioural issues to the Link Centre, a support section for pupils in the grounds away from the main body of the school, or not in at all.

The school denied the allegations, claiming inspectors walking around may disrupt the routine and upset some children but that they had not tried to hide them or that they asked parents to keep them away.

Headteacher Dr Simon Riding said: “This report reflects exactly how far Matravers has progressed in a very short period of time.

“The students are exceptional and possess the drive and desire to continue to deliver outstanding performance in all that they do.

“It is a privilege to be their headteacher and we look forward to welcoming Ofsted again, hopefully next year, to secure our full outstanding judgement.”

The report described Dr Riding, who has been at the school since September 2013 and is the fourth headteacher in the past two years, as having ‘outstanding leadership and is driving forward the work of this rapidly improving school’.

It also acknowledged that ‘students who are disabled and those with special educational needs make outstanding progress’ and that ‘the school is very inclusive and students talk about feeling part of a family’.

Improvements to be made it claimed are that ‘the most able students are not challenged enough in some lessons’ and ‘the gap between the achievement of disadvantaged students and their peers is narrowing rapidly, but is not yet closed’.

Guy Davies, chair of governors, said: “The board of governors is pleased to note that the report recognises the rapid progress made by the school since it was last inspected in February 2013.

“That things have moved so far and so fast is tribute to the outstanding leadership of our headteacher, Dr Riding, and the hard work of our dedicated staff and remarkable students.

“Together we will continue to do all we can to ensure that Matravers is recognised as a truly outstanding school at the heart of the Westbury community.”
