A WARMINSTER family will attempt to cover the 2,200 miles from their home to Monte Carlo and back in six days as part of the Monte Carlo or Bust rally.

Nigel Williams, who will be doing the challenge alongside wife Elizabeth and son Patrick, said: “I saw the idea to do it from looking in a national newspaper and decided it would be good to have a go at.

“We decided to choose a London cab as it was something that stands out and something that was reliable although we’ve had to spend some time working on it as we could only buy it for £300 – it had the most appalling electronics I’ve ever seen.

“I’ve never done anything like this before but about 30 years ago I did drive to Monte Carlo in an MG so I know the challenges of driving an old car down there but I’m really looking forward to it.

“An issue we have is the cab can only go 55mph and I think it will really struggle over the Alps as it’s pretty heavy.

“I’m not entirely confident we can make it without problems, hence why I’ve got a lot of spares in the car, but I’ve done a few runs the longest of which was 200 miles and the car went fine.”

Taking place from July 16-19, the Monte Carlo or Bust rally will see 80 cars – all bought for £300 or less – looking to reach the finish line while being given Top Gear-style challenges en route to complete for points.

And while the official start is from just outside Calais in France, Mr Williams and his family’s journey will begin from their home in Norton Bavant and then back while raising money for Help for Heroes.

The 52-year-old civil servant said: “I’m ex-services myself and it’s a charity that’s pretty close to our hearts so it seemed like the perfect challenge to try and raise money.

“We’re hoping to raise about £2,000, a thousand of which will be while we’re travelling and the rest from selling the vehicle.

“Although I might keep it and do another rally to Marakesh as I have some friends in Morocco but we’ll see how this goes.”
