WARMINSTER will become the new home for one of the British Red Cross’ mobility aid services.

The new centre, which will open in Station Road on October 2, is moving from its current location in Salisbury which closes on September 29.

Open initially between 10am-1pm on Friday, the Red Cross is looking for new volunteers so it can extend the opening hours of the centre which will provide short-term loans of wheelchairs and other equipment to members of the public who need them due to an accident or illness.

Donna Powney, service manager for mobility aids, said: “The mobility aids service supports people at times of personal crisis and the changes will allow the Red Cross to help more people to get a wheelchair easily and quickly.

“The Salisbury building was unfortunately not fit for purpose. It was in an out-of-town location and had limited parking. The building in Warminster is far more central and has good parking, which will improve the accessibility and experience for our service users.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our group of dedicated volunteers who have run the service from Salisbury for many years.

“They have all been fully consulted about the changes and while we are delighted to say that some will continue to volunteer in Warminster, sadly we will also lose some. We wish them well and thank them for the contribution they have made.”
