WARMINSTER’S Lidl supermarket could be expanding after proposed changes were approved by the town council despite concerns from nearby residents.

The proposed development would mean an extension to the side of the building that would house an office and staff facilities such as toilets and cloakrooms and create a larger sales area within the current store.

The front of the store would also be redeveloped with a new trolley stand relocated to the side.

But Andrea Pearce, a resident of Four Flats opposite the supermarket in Station Road, is concerned about potential problems the development could create.

She said: “They came round from the council telling us about the development and with paperwork saying what we can and can’t object to.

“The reasons you would have thought would be of most concern to residents like noise, pollution and traffic are stuff we can’t object to and it doesn’t make any sense to me.

“There are only five of us here who are going to be the nearest to it but the work is going to be right across from us.

“The problem is if there is going to be work traffic coming up Station Road as access is already a problem for us.”

At Warminster’s planning committee meeting on Monday however, the plans were unanimously approved despite some reservations from councillors.

Councillor Andrew Davies said: “I’m not going to move or second this one as I think this might come before us again.

“By doing this we will be reducing the amount of car parking spaces.”

Councillor Steve Dancey added: “We’ve never had a problem with parking there before but if there was a problem you would have a point.

“This is the third proposal we have had from them though so I would have thought they would have submitted all this at the beginning.”

The extension would mean a reduction of five car parking spaces, from 78 to 73, but the number of disabled spaces will remain at four and adult with children spaces will also remain at four.

A public consultation will last until October 2 before the application is put before Wiltshire Council later in the year.
