WARMINSTER residents enjoyed tea and scones on Sunday (May 1) as the town’s Christian Aid group showed its love for its neighbours on a local and global scale.

People were invited to enjoy an afternoon cup of tea and a scone at the Civic Centre in exchange for a donation to support Christian Aid’s work, tackling poverty around the world.

More than 30 people attended the first ever tea party, which comes ahead of Christian Aid Week (May 15-21), when the charity will be asking the British public to love every neighbour, wherever they live in the world.

One of the organisers, Sheelagh Wurr, said: “We wanted to hold an event that could be enjoyed by our community and at the same time benefit people across the world who are trapped in poverty.

“The concept of ‘neighbourliness’ feels very appropriate right now with refugees on our doorstep and we were delighted by the town’s response.

“There was a lovely atmosphere and lots of praise for the home-made cakes kindly donated by supporters. We will certainly consider running another one another time.”

During Christian Aid Week, Britain’s longest running door-to-door fundraising week, churches and Christian Aid groups across the South West raised £1.24million in 2015, including over £140,000 in Wiltshire and Swindon.

The tea party also included a Christian Aid stall so people could find out more about how to get involved in Christian Aid Week.

Across Wiltshire there will be sponsored walks, plant sales, Big Brekkies and special services and collections as churches and residents express their love for their global neighbour.
