VILLAGERS in Corsley have grouped together to buy the Cross Keys pub from Wadworth after the brewery sold it in January.

The pub, in Lyes Green, will reopen next weekend after a three month hiatus thanks to the hard work and determination of the village’s residents.

Neil Carpenter, who is co-ordinating the refurbishment, said: “In January, Wadworth announced that it was going to shut the pub, so the village agreed that it would like to save it.

“A petition was then started which received 180 signatures and raised the amount of money needed to purchase the pub. The sale was completed on April 29 and we have been working flat out since then.

“Around 40 people have put in over 1,000 hours of free labour to get the pub up to standard, it’s been a real community effort.”

“The pub has always been a big part of the village and played an important role in the community, which is why so many people have been keen to get stuck in.”

The pub will sell traditional, locally sourced, home cooked pub food and a new range of beers, which people are invited to sample at the reopening on Saturday, May 28.
