SIX members of Warminster’s Military Wives Choir performed on the same stage as Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and many more on Friday (May 27).

The singers joined 30 other military wives choirs from across the UK to form a choir of around 135, who performed at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall – where Frank Sinatra first sang ‘New York New York’.

The choir was asked to make the journey to New York by composer Paul Mealor, who wrote the foundation's chart-topping ‘Wherever You Are’ in 2011, as part of the 'Triumph of Hope' concert.

Abigail Watson, events coordinator of the choir, said: “There aren’t really any words to explain just how amazing it was.

“Obviously we were excited before but it wasn’t until we actually walked into the hall that it hit us.

“And I have to say we absolutely smashed it – there’s no other way of putting it.

“We got a standing ovation from the audience and were called back for an encore.

“There was also a notoriously harsh New York critique in attendance who wrote a great review.

"We can't believe it's over, we want to go back already."

Prior to singing in Carnegie Hall, the 135-strong choir performed a flash mob in Times Square, took over the top floor of Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Broadway to sing 'Bring Him Home' and had a tour around the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

Joanna Grant, one of Warminster’s choir members, sang the solo for ‘Wherever You Are’ at the concert.

Mrs Watson said: “She did Warminster proud with her solo. Auditions were held for it and she was absolutely perfect for it.

“It’s just been an incredible journey for us, many of us are just amateur singers but we have performed in one of the most famous venues in the world.”

The Military Wives Choirs Foundation is a charity that brings women in the military community closer together through singing.
