THOUSANDS of people enjoyed the annual Horningsham Village Fair on Sunday as a range of events kept all ages entertained.

The fair has been running for around 40 years and each year raises money for organisations in the village such as the village hall, church and cricket team.

An Elton John lookalike competition was organised to celebrate the music legend playing at Longleat but nobody entered.

Steve Crossman said: “We had all the normal bits and pieces you would expect to find at a village fayre such as plant sales, bric-a-brac and numerous stalls. It was a very traditional fair, as it is every year.

“We also had a selection of beautiful vintage cars and two steam trains. The local cricket team had a round of skittles.

“In the arena there was a dog show and seven-legged race before the day finished with the plank race, where the winner was awarded with the Crossman Memorial cup, named after my father.

“There must have been around 2,000 people pass through over the course of the day which was great to see. We're about the only show which isn't on a Saturday and we don't charge people for parking or entry which is also quite rare."

“A special mention must go to Caroline Dykes, Leslie Trollope and Ken Winduss, who all worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it a successful event.”

The show was opened by Ceawlin and Emma Thynn, who stayed for a few hours before heading to Longleat for the Elton John concert.

As part of Longleat’s 50th anniversary celebrations, there was an attraction from the safari park on display, which will be at Longleat later this year.

Entertainment was provided by the Frome Ukelele Club.
