FORMER Warminster mayor May Law died while on holiday on June 16 after suffering a stroke.

Mrs Law was a member of the town council from 1991-1995 and served as mayor from 1993-1994.

Following her tenure as a councillor, Mrs Law continued to fight for what she believed in by attending council meetings and was described as a ‘colourful character’ by many, despite her photograph on the mayors’ 'wall of fame' being in black and white, which she used to laugh about.

Councillor Paul Macdonald, who was a close friend of the former mayor, said: "We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss and our first thoughts go to her family.

“May will be sadly missed by all that knew her and came to rely on her for help and advice on a wide range of issues. The wealth of knowledge and experience that she acquired since being Mayor in the 1990s, particularly in the field of housing issues, is quite frankly irreplaceable.

“After her four-year term as a councillor May quietly and mostly behind the scenes continued to work on behalf of the town giving many hours of her time. Over the 25 years that I have known her this was always with the best interests of Warminster in her heart.”

Mrs Law was passionate about achieving affordable housing for local residents and worked for Selwood Housing’s scrutiny team later in her life.

Her involvement saw many positive changes at Selwood Housing including changes to their caretaking service and complaints procedure and she even took part in the recruitment of key staff members including Barry Hughes and Diane Hall, group finance director.

Mr Hughes, group chief executive of Selwood Housing said: “Our thoughts go out to May Law’s family. May was incredibly committed to Selwood Housing and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

“May was passionate and knowledgeable about her local community and she has worked hard to ensure the service we provide to our tenants is the best that it can be.

“She was a bright and interesting character whose involvement with Selwood Housing has been greatly appreciated for many years.”
