AFTER months of knitting, Warminster's poppy appeal now stands at a total of 8,000 completed poppies which will be used to 'paint the town red'.

Poppies have been knitted by people from as far as Cornwall, Wales and even California for the town to be ‘yarn bombed’ in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday, which is on November 13.

Poppy appeal organiser Lesley Fudge said: “I am absolutely delighted with the response.

“Lots of people have got in touch to say that knitting poppies has helped with their loneliness in the evening and with their pain, as it can be very therapeutic.”

Mrs Fudge is now working on creating a cascade from the poppies which will be featured at the Chapel of St Lawrence in the centre of the town.

Poppies with names of soldiers who lost their lives sewn on will also be attached to the town’s memorial bench in the build-up to the memorial.
