AEROSPARX completed one of their biggest shows of the year at the weekend, flying through the skies at the Bournemouth Air Festival with crowds of around 750,000.

The aerobatics company, based in Longbridge Deverill, comprises two motor gliders which launch fireworks from their wings as they spiral through the air at soaring speeds.

Experienced pilots Tim Dews and Guy Westgate started the unique company last year after they met while working at the London Paralympics in 2012.

Mr Dews said: “We realised there was a gap in the market for a night-time display such as ours, so using our experience, we decided to clash heads and launched the company last year.

“Since forming, we have performed around 30 times and we’re becoming more known with every show.

“We really enjoy being up in the sky – it’s definitely busy up there with fireworks shooting off in all directions, but very good fun too.”

When up in the sky, the two pilots fire out Roman candles and ‘waterfalls’, which form the main part of their displays.

They set the fireworks off using 'e matches', with volts running from their respective cockpits into the match on the wings of the gliders.

To practice, they perform what they call ‘bumble bee dances’ at their base in Longbridge Deverill, which involves them mimicking the paths that their gliders will take in the sky by walking in harmony until they are completely synchronised.

When in the skies, they communicate using radios to ensure that they are in time with each other, as one false move could end in disaster.

Aside from the fireworks, each glider is fitted with 12,000 LED lenses, which cover the fuselage and wings, giving the effect that they are ‘painting with light’ as they fly through the sky.
