WILTSHIRE Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the A303 between Zeals and Mere earlier today.
The incident happened at around 5.45am this morning (Monday September 5) and involved three vehicles on the eastbound carriageway.
A white Ford Fiesta left the carriageway for reasons unknown and came to rest in the roadside ditch.
A second silver Ford Fiesta then stopped in the first lane of the carriageway, when it was struck from behind by a blue Scannia 3 axle lorry towing a trailer, loaded with concrete blocks.
As a consequence of the collision the male driver of the silver Ford Fiesta in the carriageway received serious injuries and died at the scene.
The male driver of the white Ford Fiesta was taken to Salisbury District Hospital with minor injuries.
The eastbound carriageway was closed for eight hours while collision investigation work was carried out.
PC Tony Hall, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the collision between the lorry and the silver Fiesta, or who may have seen the white Fiesta leave the road.
"We are also appealing for any witnesses who may have seen any of the three vehicles prior to either of the collisions."
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Hall on 101.
