ROYALTY was chosen for this year’s Warminster Carnival at a fun day on Sunday, September 11.

Leo Slatford, 8, of St. John’s School, was nominated as this year’s prince and Aimee Hird, 7, also of St. John's, was nominated as princess, with seven-year-old Scarlet Shepherd of Minster School named as the princess's attendant.

However, organiser or the fun day and chairman of the carnival for 18 years, Sandra Major, was not happy with the turnout on the day.

She said: “Although it was a fun day, we noticed that the attendance was not as good as last year and there weren’t as many entries for the princess and prince categories.

“It seems to be a nationwide trend that carnivals are in decline, which is a big shame.

“The attendance is always good at the carnival itself but people don’t seem to realise that the future of it relies on fundraising events such as the fun day on Sunday.

“By attending these events and by putting money in the collection buckets that are taken around, they are helping it keep on going.

“I fear for the future of Warminster Carnival and other carnivals across the country.

The fun day also featured performances by Warminster Brass Band, Warminster Community Choir, Richard Raw, Infinity Dance Team and Frome Cheerleaders Squad.

In the baby competition, the winner of the 0-12 months category was Ava Lillian Evans, 18 weeks old, and in the 13-24 month category the winner was Marcie Williams, 21 months old.

This year’s carnival takes place on Saturday, October 29.
