AN author who had his first ever book published by a major publisher earlier this year visited St George’s Primary School in Warminster to read extracts from the book and inspire pupils to read more.

Bradford on Avon man Jimmy Griggs, who penned Ralph Higley and the Illuminatu, which was published by White Glove Publishers in July, visited the school on Monday, October 3.

The visit was arranged by reception teacher Vicky Davies, who wanted children at the school to become more inspired by books.

She said: “The children really enjoyed it. Jimmy led workshops with them and they were all very engaged throughout.

“For his book he did a lot of historical research into the tunnels of Frome which the children found very interesting.

“It was his first book signing since his book was published in April and we tied it in with Bath Literature Festival.

“The aim is very much to get them reading and writing more often. Both are fundamental for learning and being creative.

“It’s inspirational to hear someone like Jimmy talk so I’m glad the children enjoyed his visit.”

The story’s protagonist is Ralph, a boy who sees things no one else can.

As an invisible creature threatens his life, taking his best friend away, all seems lost, but the adventure begins when a strange man rescues him.

The book cover was designed by West Country artist Chris Fisher and it is available from Amazon.

Mr Griggs said: "It was a really memorable experience, all the kids were very well behaved and seemed to enjoy the book.

"I think I was more nervous than they were but it was a fantastic experience which was valuable for myself and the children."
