ALTHOUGH pupils at Horningsham Primary School have a strong connection with their local community, they are being encouraged to think about the wider world in a school which strives for cultural acceptance.

With 80 pupils spread over three classes, the school, located in Church Street and overlooking the grandeur of Longleat House, prides itself on traditional values with a focus on diversity and leadership – something which headteacher Carole Andrews has been working hard to implement.

"We have a set of 12 values and one of those values is diversity but we also have equality and respect," she said. "The children wrote these values with us a few years ago and in the definitions, the world and Britain are always mentioned."

The school also received the prestigious International School Award from the British Council in September in recognition for its work to bring the world into the classroom, including its links with a school in Yangzhou, China, which they Skype monthly.

Mrs Andrews, who has been at the school since 2005, said: "I want them to develop a sense of what it is like to be a global citizen because that is the working world they will be going into.

"We are having monthly chats with a school in China where the pupils can talk to each other and that is really exciting for them. We have different themes each month and this week we are talking about our home town, its history and its community."

The school also recently celebrated receiving its fourth consecutive Good rating from Oftsed, something which the headteacher says she couldn't be happier with.

"We have worked really hard as a school community and we strive for improvements all the time," she said. "We have a real family feeling and one Indian teacher told me we are a very small school with a very big heart. We know our children really well and the children are so supportive of one another because we are small enough to get to know everyone."

Horningsham Primary School will be hosting a viewing morning on Tuesday, November 8, 9.15-10.30am for new starters in 2017.
