SOME of Warminster’s public payphones could soon be removed as BT is set to undertake a consultation to consider their future.

The payphones which have been earmarked for removal are in Victoria Road, Woodcock road, Boreham Road, Portway Lane, Thornhill Road and Boreham Road.

Councillors discussed the issue at a town council meeting on Monday, November 21 and were concerned that the low usage of the phones was due to them being out of order rather than there being no demand for them.

Town clerk Heather Abernethie is going to contact BT for an engineer’s report to gauge their usage and the issue will be discussed at a meeting on Monday, December 5.

The town council would like to hear from any members of the public who use the payphones and would be disadvantaged by their removal, or those who have attempted to use any of the above payphones but have found them out of order.

This is to establish whether there is a demand for the service in these areas before responding to BT’s consultation, which closes in January.
