ANNE the elephant enjoyed a hamper filled with her favourite foods this week after Aldi’s Trowbridge store agreed to donate one to her free of charge.

Emma Riley, who visits Longleat regularly, contacted the supermarket to ask if they would like to donate a hamper to the elephant and they agreed.

It was delivered to her on Thursday afternoon after Mrs Riley collected it from the store.

She said: “It was very kind of Aldi to agree to make up a hamper for Anne.

“I chose Aldi because of their policy on organic food, which I admire. I am careful about the food I give to my children and the same goes for Anne – she deserves good quality produce.

“I checked with Longleat and they said they were happy to go ahead with it and the hamper was greatly received.”

The hamper contained watermelons, apples, bananas and cabbage, which are some of Anne’s favourite foods.

Store manager Andy Tanner said: “As soon as Emma got in touch I was happy to oblige as it sounded like a good cause.

“The fact she chose to come to use highlights the high quality of our produce. We have brought in a lot of organic lines and we are trying to lead the way in that respect.”

Anne the elephant is a former circus elephant who now lives alone at Longleat.

There is a Facebook group called ‘Anne needs elephants’ with nearly 800 members which is campaigning to get her a companion in her vast compound.

The group has started a petition which has been signed by over 11,000 people.
