A TEAM from Wiltshire Outdoor Learning Centre in Warminster are training for a walking challenge to raise money for a nutrition programme in Africa.

Alastair Bell and four teammates from the centre in Gipsy Lane will be tackling the 30-mile Imber Trail overnight on March 3 – and to make the challenge even tougher the team will be fasting for 24 hours during their trek.

Mr Bell, 32, of Codford, said: “I saw an advert on Facebook about the nutrition programme in Liberia so I mentioned it to the guys and we decided to do a fundraiser.

"It was then suggested to push it a bit further and do the walk while fasting for 24 hours, so when the Imber Trail idea was mentioned we decided to take it on.

“The walk is 30 miles so we are expecting it to take about 15 hours. We will be having a meal on the Friday night then starting at about 8pm and looking to finish at 11am the next morning.”

The challenge will raise money for UNICEF UK and a campaign to support a nutrition programme in Liberia which helps children and adults who suffer from chronic malnutrition. Charitable foundation The Power of Nutrition will match every pound the team raises.

“Some of the guys have been running to train and closer to the time we will be doing long walks," said Mr Bell.

"This is the first time we have decided to do something like this together and I am looking forward to the challenge,” he added.

Mr Bell and his workmates are calling the challenge Empty Imber and have already raised £440.

“Our target is £1,000 so hopefully we can raise that – if not we have given it a go,” he said.
