A YOUNG woman was taken to hospital in Bath this morning after her vehicle hit a brick wall in the centre of Westbury near the West End Baptist Church.

It is understood the accident happened at around 9.48am when her blue Seat Ibiza car left the A350 in West End and hit the corner of a house.

The accident closed the main road through Westbury for more than 75 minutes while Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and Wiltshire Police dealt with the incident.

Fire crews from Trowbridge and Warminster were called to the scene and used hydraulic equipment to free the trapped woman from the vehicle by cutting off the roof.

She was removed on a spinal board and was taken by ambulance to the Royal United Hospital in Bath. It is not known whether the woman has serious injuries.

One bystander said: “There was traffic chaos. The town centre was gridlocked for more than an hour.”

Police diverted through traffic along Frogmore Road in Westbury. Large HGVs were unable to navigate the narrow streets, so police asked drivers to park up while the accident scene was cleared.
