WYLYE Valley Primary School in Codford is the winner of this year’s ‘Environmental Youth Award’ for Wiltshire.

The aim is to recognise the part played by young people in promoting environmental projects, as well as encouraging a better understanding of conservation and environmental issues.

The Royal Bath and West of England Society organised the annual award and will present the small rural school with a trophy, certificate and a cheque on Friday, June 1 at this year’s Royal Bath and West Show.

The 109 pupils at Wylye Valley Primary have become world eco-warriors and have developed a strong environmental awareness.

This is reflected through the whole ethos of the school, which has gained coveted Green Flag status for its efforts.

Head teacher Rob Barnes said: “We are immensely proud for being the Wiltshire winner this year. We also hope to be named as overall winners for the South West of England.”

The school’s rural setting enables pupils to take part in a number of ongoing projects, including Forest School and gardening – even picking, cooking and eating their own produce!

The ‘Wylye World Warriors’, the school’s ‘eco’ group, had the task of showing the judges around the school.

Led by their enthusiastic teacher, Mrs Georgie Baker, the group organise regular litter picks, hold assemblies to raise awareness and also ensure that there are signs and posters around the school to encourage pupils to think about issues such as recycling and the environment. Mrs Baker said: “All pupils learn about the local flora and fauna and the school has now achieved the prestigious Green Flag status for eco awareness.”

The school itself also benefits from an eco-friendly new extension, created from sustainable materials and fitted with solar panels.
