The rededication of Westbury’s war memorial at All Saints Church took place on Sunday.

Dozens of people attended the event to pay their respects at the memorial restored to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The Bishop of Ramsbury, the Rt Revd Ed Condry led the rededication.

Wiltshire Councillor David Jenkins, chairman of Westbury’s war commemorations, said: “There was excellent support from the community and the church service went extremely well and, despite some inclement weather, we were able to get out and have a small ceremony at the war memorial in the churchyard.

“It is nice to see the war memorial in such an improved condition and the rededication is part of our calendar of First World War events.”

Cllr Jenkins said that he is proud of the events that have taken place. The group plans to host events through to 2018 when it will be 100 years since the conflict ended.

People wanting to discover what ties they had to the First World War can attend a family history event at Westbury Methodist Church from 10am on September 6.

Cllr Jenkins said: “We wanted to make sure that we remembered the servicemen as well as those who were still at home during the Great War and suffering the effects.

“I imagine the family history event will prove popular.”
