Spiderman, Superman and a steampunk Dalek were among those made an appearance at Melksham Comic Con at the weekend.

More than 1,000 people from all over the country gathered to get their slice of comic and sci-fi fun as Melksham Assembly Hall opened its doors for the convention’s first two-day event.

Comic Con organiser Hayley Spencer, who also owns KomiX in Bank Street, Melksham, said: “It was our first event across the weekend so we didn’t know what to expect but we had over 1,000 turn up and it was such a great atmosphere.

"Seeing everyone’s faces made up for all the stress.”

Miss Spencer and her growing team of staff treated comic buffs to range of entertainment, with panels of guest speakers discussing various topics from the history of comics to comic books and mental health.

Guests also included illustrator and designer Andrew Wildman, who has worked on books Transformers, X-Men and Spiderman and Ian Churchill who has illustrated for the likes of The Avengers, Superman and Teen Titans.

Visitors were able to browse stalls consisting of knitted Wonder Woman and Flash Gordon dolls to oil paintings and engraved glass work to a whole range of other sci-fi and comic related goodies. For the kids face painting and balloon modelling took place and artists were also on hand to produce drawings.

Brand new to this year’s convention was also the introduction of art competitions for children and adults as well as a cosplay competition.

Miss Spencer said: “It’s great for a small town like this to support it and feel like other people are into it as well because it is a national event.

“We would like to thank the community for all their support.”
