A Westbury mum is devastated after thieves broke into her home in daylight and stole cash, including her six-year-old son’s birthday money.

Claire Chambers, 28, who lives on Cossington Square, was visiting a neighbour when burglars forced their way into her home between 2.15- 3.30pm last Friday.

The thieves, who got in by smashing the glass in a rear door, took son Milo’s £30 birthday cash and a large sum of money Miss Chambers and her partner Dan Sheppard had been saving to buy a new car.

Miss Chambers, a self-employed cleaner who has lived there since last April, said: “It’s awful, absolutely awful, especially because we only rent the house.

“It does feel weird being in now because it feels as though it has been violated.

“When I got back home I saw the kitchen cupboard open and I thought Dan must have been home, but then I saw the smashed glass.”

The break-in happened 11 days after Milo celebrated his sixth birthday, and initially left the youngster scared to go into the house.

“We haven’t told him his money was taken, to protect him,” added Miss Chambers. “He knows someone broke in and at first he didn’t want to go back in the house and thought his toys had been smashed.

“We calmed him down and showed him the board we put up where the glass was smashed to reassure him.”

Miss Chambers and her partner are now appealing for anyone who might have seen something to come forward.

“We know we won’t ever get that money back, but we just want any witnesses to come forward, no matter how small a piece of information might be.

“The back of our house looks onto a main road so if you were going past on a bus you might have seen something. It’s not about the money it’s about the violation. it makes you feel creepy knowing someone was looking through your home.”
