AN energy efficient eco home in Westbury Leigh that generates all the energy it uses is due to appear on television programme Building the Dream.

The £230,000 house, which was built from scratch, can generate its own electricity, heat and water meaning owners Vince and Jackie Macey will be bill-free.

Taking just over 14 months to build, the programme will follow the construction of the house and will be shown on More4 on May 26.

Mr Macey, 53, of Westbury Leigh Road, said: “The program heard about us through a ventilation company we’ve been using and got in touch that way.

“They’ve been coming and going about 12 times over the past year from when it was just a grass garden. They last came at the start of April.

“They love a problem, if you say ‘we’re having a problem doing something’ they’ll send a cameraman down within about two hours.

“We’re a bit apprehensive about the show. I think my wife is more nervous because we don’t have a clue what’s in it until it goes live, as they say.”

Despite going more than £60,000 over budget, the three-bedroom property has double the amount of insulation you would find in a normal home, triple-glazed windows and a water butt to collect rain water which is used in the house.

It also has solar panels to produce electricity and re-uses wasted heat from baths or showers to warm the home.

Mr Macey, who has been living in the house on Westbury Leigh Road for the past month, was keen to build his dream home after seeing how more conventional houses are built.

The self-employed electrician said: “To be frank the reason I wanted to create this home was because of the bad practice I see when I’m out on a job.

“It’s just pathetic the amount of effort put into houses to make them more energy sustainable and reduce what we use.

“I see so many houses built badly because not enough resources, like insulation, are used.”

And with his newly constructed home appearing on TV in the near future, Mr Macey has been left pleased with the final product.

“The whole house isn’t a show home, although the TV programme is all about the wow factor. This house is very much just for us and I don’t really care what other people think.

“But I am chuffed at how it’s performing and how it feels as it’s not all glass and blingy because it has that cottage, homely feel to it.”
