TWO new CCTV cameras will be installed near Leigh Park and the Community Centre after being approved by Westbury Town Council on Monday.

The recommendation was put forward by Councillor Sue Ezra, chair of the CCTV Working Group, who said: “As you know there have recently been break-ins at Tesco Express and the Community Centre as well as graffiti on a number of walls.

“Speaking in our group and with the police we think cameras need to be put up.

“It’s clear that the community would benefit from this area being added to the council’s CCTV system.”

The total cost for both cameras would be £5,581, not including VAT or running costs, with one camera linked to a CCTV control room and the other linked via radio to the first.

The dome cameras will be able to offer a full 360 degree view of the area and potentially reduce crime.
The recommendation was approved with a majority vote, but a number of councillors raised concerns about the purchase of new cameras.

Councillor Francis Morland said: “I have reservations about giving Tesco what is effectively a free camera. I don’t think the council should be taking responsibility for this.

“Also, we don’t know if these lights will work when the street lights are switched off which is what the council has begun to do at night.”
