CITIZENS Advice Bureau weekly drop-in sessions in Westbury are to be cancelled in a bid to save cash.

Town councillors spoke of their disappointment when told at a meeting on Monday that the Westbury office will be closed from August 1.

Jo Sutton, head of people and resources at the CAB, said: “We have found that more people would rather speak over the phone than go out to talk so we are looking to address this.

“There are three offices based close together in Trowbridge, Warminster and Westbury and it doesn’t seem sensible to keep three going when we need to make cuts like all organisations.

“We want to reach out to the community and make sure we get out there and still provide a service and that the need for people is identified."

Many councillors disagreed with the closure and voiced their concerns.

Councillor David Tout said: “I’m getting hot under the collar here, I was born in Westbury, educated in Westbury, live in Westbury.

“When it comes to cuts it is always Westbury that is the first to go and I'm sick of it and this town is absolutely sick of having things taken out of it.”

Councillor Francis Morland added: “I’m extremely disappointed about this, this town spent a lot of time for the Citizens Advice Bureau to set up here and now it is deserting Westbury.

“Trowbridge as a community is a big community but it doesn’t have the problems that Westbury does and I do see this as a backwards step.”

Westbury Mayor David Bradshaw said: “I’m disappointed in your decision and I hope you will go back and look at it again.”
