A 24-YEAR-OLD man is being treated for a suspected broken pelvis and back injuries after falling 60 feet down the Westbury White Horse and being airlifted to hospital.

The incident happened just after 3.30pm on Sunday when the man, from the Oxfordshire area, lost his footing in the slippery conditions when out walking with his parents and brother.

The man was airlifted from the scene by a coastguard helicopter and transferred to Southampton General Hospital.

Emergency services including the South West Ambulance Service, paramedics from the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, fire crews from Trowbridge and Westbury and police also attended the scene.

Acting watch manager from Trowbridge Fire Station Matt Skyme, said: “We attended the scene with two Road Rescue Units and one Heavy Rescue Unit which would be used to create anchor points if we needed to winch him up.

“In the end the coastguard was used but they were concerned because of the extreme weather and so we were more there as a plan B in case they couldn’t use the helicopter.

“The weather was certainly a bit of an issue for the pilot.”
