WESTBURY witnessed a mock recruitment drive as part of the town’s Great War commemoration.

Youngsters from the area were put through their paces at The Laverton as they were taught about the First World War and got to dress up as soldiers and nurses.

They also saw the Wiltshire at War exhibition, which traces family histories, and the Wiltshire Wall of Remembrance, a countywide project marking the soldiers who fought and died in the Great War.

Mayor David Bradshaw said: “We went into Matravers School last Thursday where we had a trench built and showed them what life was like in WWI, which they enjoyed."

“The exhibition has been well received but I was amazed at the amount of people we went up to on Saturday who didn’t know about it.

“People who went really enjoyed it and will come away having learned about World War One.”
