A WESTBURY mum-of-three is attempting to raise £10,000 to build a sensory room for her autistic son to give him a safe place to play.

Carol May is hoping to create a room similar to the one at Trowbridge’s Larkrise Specialist School, which allows her ten-year-old son Rossi to relax and not harm himself.

The 37-year-old, of Phipps Close, said: “The sensory room would be like a play room and I’d hope to get sensory things like special lighting and musical toys in it.

“Speaking with the school, he seems to calm down and do his own thing in their sensory room but at home he’s completely different.

“He has meltdowns where he bites himself and just gets really angry, which he does at school but because he has the room he can go there and calm down.

“It’s getting harder at home as we now have a two-year-old daughter, Montoya, and he keeps pushing her about - but he just thinks he’s playing.”

As well as having the mental age of a one-year-old, Rossi is also non-verbal, meaning he has little way of communicating with his mum and dad Ashley.

Mrs May added: “We have to rely on reading the signs as there is no way of him telling us.

“Having this room would mean I could leave him in there knowing he is safe if I have to go cook in the kitchen or put the washing out.

“He doesn’t know what danger is so I can’t let him play in the garden or leave him with his sister as he pushes her about.

“At the moment I have to put a hell of a lot on our 14-year-old son AJ, who is a diamond at looking after him.

“I'm struggling to give him what he needs to keep him occupied so this room would be so amazing for him and a massive help to me.”

Having currently raised £685, Mrs May is looking to hold events to raise further funds and have the extension installed at her house.

“I work for Tesco’s and I’m hoping we can get them to donate a toy or something that we can auction off over Facebook.

“I also want to do some collecting at The Shires, I have a few friends who are a bit zanier than me and who’ll probably dress-up to help us get donations.”
