STAFF and children at Westbury Leigh Primary School had a blast from the past as they took part in an Anglo-Saxon Day.

Year 5 students from the Sandalwood Road school dressed up in period clothing while observing the weaponry typically used in this period.

James Waylander, a freelance historian from Wiltshire Library Services, also taught pupils defining moments in Anglo-Saxon history.

Sophie and Harley, both nine, said: “The best bit was going on to the field to learn battle tactics with shields and spears.

“It was a great launch into our topic. We had an amazing experience.”

England was ruled by the Anglo-Saxons until the Norman Conquest in 1066.
