WESTBURY will welcome a vintage Britannia class Pacific steam train later this month as the Dartmouth Express travels from London to Devon.

Taking place on October 24, the express, comprised of vintage rail coaches, will depart from London Paddington hauled by diesel before meeting the historic steam locomotive waiting at Westbury.

From there, it will travel through the Somerset countryside, across the Somerset Levels, before climbing to Whiteball Summit on the Somerset and Devon border and will then follow the Exe Estuary running along the famous, now restored, sea wall from Dawlish to Teignmouth.

Passengers will have the choice of stopping in the English Riviera town of Paignton or continuing onwards to Kingswear, where they can take a ferry across the River Dart to the port town of Dartmouth.

The Railway Touring Company’s managing director, Nigel Dobbing, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer people from Westbury a day out by vintage train.

“The combination of vintage carriages and a magnificent steam locomotive, 1951-built No. 70000 Britannia, joining the train at Westbury will make this a nostalgic experience with Dartmouth providing an interesting destination.”
