WESTBURY mum Carol May is delighted, after collecting more than £1,000 at a family fun day at the Railway Inn in the town, which will go towards building a sensory room for her 10-year-old autistic son Rossi.

The mother-of-three is trying to raise £10,000 to build the specialist room at her home in Phipps Close for Rossi, who has the mental age of a one-year-old and is non-verbal.

The 37-year-old said: “It was amazing, it went brilliantly and we had a really good turnout. It takes our total to £2,400.

“It was as much about getting money as getting the message out there about what we’re trying to do.

“We even had a plasterer come forward on the night to offer his services, so now we have an electrician, a carpenter and plasterer, we just need a builder.

“I feel amazing about it, at one time building this room was just a thought and I didn’t think we were going to achieve this but now I can see it happening.”

Almost 100 people attended the family fun day at The Railway Inn pub, in Station Road, on Saturday (October 3) which included bouncy castles, face painting and bingo.

There was also a raffle, consisting of prizes including day passes to CenterParcs, food vouchers and a signed t-shirt from Trowbridge boxer and British champion, Nick Blackwell.

Mrs May added: “Rossi’s teaching assistants came as well and it was really touching to see them, as I’m sure they value their weekends but they were really thankful for what we were doing.

“We’ve got a guy who wants to do a skydive for us and my sister has suggested doing a head shave to raise more money.

“We have also got plans to fundraise in Trowbridge’s Tesco and to do another raffle in Trowbridge as well.

“This event at the weekend has given me a lot of hope.”
