THE appeal to raise £150,000 and get Alexander Vinson proton beam therapy in the USA is one step closer after Holt’s Mike Hawkins took it upon himself to go out and fundraise.
The 81-year-old went out last Sunday and collected more than £80 from houses down Bradley Road after seeing Alexander’s story in the Wiltshire Times.
He said: “I spent two hours going down the road and almost every house donated something.
“Not many people in Holt get the Wiltshire Times so they didn’t know his story, so I went out with it so people could see.
“I have a grandson the same age, it struck a chord with me. Some people said you don’t know him, but I said that didn’t matter, it was about helping him and his family out.”
The Alexander Appeal has so far raised more than £20,000 in donations after Kid ‘n’ Cancer and the Wiltshire Times offered their support.
To donate, visit justgiving.com/actionforalexander/ or send cheques to Kids ‘n’ Cancer at Bridge Business Centre, Beresford Way, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S41 9FG. Cheques should include a note on the back stating ‘Alexander Appeal’.
