OLD buildings and landmarks being blown up at the press of a red button is something we have all seen in films, but for one lucky pupil in the Westbury area, it will soon be a reality.

As excitement builds for the highly anticipated demolition of the 400ft chimney at Westbury's former cement works, Tarmac, the company managing the site, has announced a competition to give one local pupil a once in a lifetime opportunity - to blow the chimney up To enter, entrants must paint or draw a picture of the Westbury White Horse and include the chimney in the picture.

Liam Cripps, Community Engagement Manager for Westbury, said: “The cement works has been part of Westbury for decades and whilst I don’t pretend to know all the history, I am aware that many people locally have some connection to the site either as direct employees or family members of employees.

“Being such a recognisable landmark in Westbury and indeed Wiltshire, it wouldn’t be right to not include the community in some way.

“We have all seen a demolition on television and this is an opportunity for the Westbury community area to experience the buzz and excitement for themselves.

“Not only will there be the chance to watch the chimney come down, but one lucky primary school child will actually have the job of pressing the button.

“Unless you work in the demolition industry I think it’s fair to say this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and something that child will remember forever.”

Entries are open to all schools in the Westbury community area and must be returned to the school by Friday, April 29.

There is still no confirmed date for the demolition, but it is expected that it will take place late in May, early in the morning at the weekend.
