AS excitement builds for the lighting of the beacon on top of Westbury White Horse to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, here are a few reminders for everyone planning on attending the event this evening.

The beacon will be lit at 7.30pm by Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Lt Gen Sir Roderick Cordy-Simpson.

Organisers are reminding everybody attending the event that the roads leading up to the White Horse are narrow and extra care should be taken when driving, due to an expected increase in vehicle traffic

It is also advised that people should arrive early to find a parking space.

And follow these three steps to ensure safety:

  • Wear sensible footwear – the ground around the beacon is uneven. Walking or trail shoes are advised, casual footwear including trainers is not advised
  • Wear sensible clothing, as it may be raining or cold
  • Bring a torch - the beacon will be lit as dusk is nearing, so bring a torch to help see around the area
