IN the reception area at Bitham Brook Primary School in Westbury, pictures of teachers drawn by pupils line the wall.

And as The Wiltshire Times speaks to head teacher David Ross on the phone, a group of six pupils walk into his office to proudly show off their work. These examples, explains Mr Ross, tie in with the school’s vision of ‘head, hands and heart.'

He said: “We want to show pupils that we are all together, working as a team to achieve the best results. One of the best bits about the job is children coming to show me their work.

“The head aspect of our vision relates to learning and knowledge, the hands aspect is about working together as a team and the heart is about self-confidence. All of the children understand this vision and put it into practice.

“This is one of the reasons why children do very well here and achieve above the national average. Our Key Stage 2 SATs results were published yesterday and highlight just that.”

Creativity runs through the core of Bitham Brook, with regular themed days organised to help pupils' learning.

Mr Ross added: “We have lots of school trips and themed days, such as a medieval day last week, which involved archery, medieval cooking and a visit from a knight.

“The imagination of children is captured thanks to these days and they are more inspired to learn when they get back in the classroom.

“The staff here are very creative and are always looking for ways to inspire their pupils with different initiatives.

“And the children excel at sport, too. The girls' football team and the swimming team have been champions in the past three years afterschool clubs are always well attended

There are a number of ‘School Seniors’ at Bitham Brook who have to write a letter to apply for the role, which increases their confidence and gives them a sense of responsibility, says Mr Ross.

“The older children help the younger children with reading and other aspects of their day-to-day lives, which makes them feel very responsible.

“There is a real family ethos here and the children understand that.”
