THE company overseeing the operation to demolish the chimney at the former cement works next Sunday (September 18) is Cuddy Group.

As established demolition experts, Cuddy Group is the UK’s leading demolition contractor and has expertise in removing structures of varyings heights, shapes and sizes in the safest and cleanest way possible.

At the helm of the company is Peter Smith, who said: “Every demolition is different, but an enormous amount of consultation and planning goes into every one.

“Ensuring that the drop-zones are clear, dealing with ecological matters such as badger setts and making sure dust levels are kept to a minimum are just a handful of the things we have to take care of in the build-up, while our specialist contractors deal with drilling the holes and placing the charges.

“Suppressing dust is a key factor with the Westbury chimney demolition in particular and we have measures in place to ensure it is kept to a minimum.

“There are a number of dust suppressing machines on site and the dust will also be manually controlled with the use of spray guns after the chimney comes down.

“Although we have vast experience, there’s always that one per cent of you that thinks ‘what if this goes wrong?’

"But you need to have complete faith and confidence in your team and of course we have contingencies in place in place should it not go to plan.”
