AROUND 1,000 steam train buffs descended upon Westbury on Sunday for the third edition of the White Horse Model Engineering and Garden Railway Show.

The White Horse Country Park event, organised by the West Wilts Society of Model Engineers, featured trade stands, model engineering club exhibits from around the region, static displays of model boats, traction engines, motorcycle and hot air engines and more.

Outside, train enthusiasts had a chance to ride on trains and model traction engines as well as getting to learn how to drive one of the contraptions.

The event featured more than 400 exhibits, with people coming from across the county and further afield.

Club member Eric Gay said: "It was an exceptionally good day out and an excellent success, going by everyone's comments and the feedback they have given.

"These events are a joy to be part of and I am very happy so many came. Each year we have got bigger and better and this one was no exception.

"What was also lovely to see was the mix of age ranges. There were children as young as three and elder statesman as old as 80 - it was wonderful.

"It is a real joy to be part of these occasions. Some of the stuff on display was of such high quality. Anything that gets this amount of people excited about something like this is a great thing and that is why it was such a success."

The show also featured 15 retailers, small steam engines and railway layouts of different sizes including garden railways.

"It takes nearly a year or so to put this altogether but it was completely worth it. In fact I am already looking forward to the next one," added Mr Gay.

Money raised from the day, which was from 10am-4.30pm, went towards Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
