WESTBURY Quilters showcased some of their finest work from across the decades at their first exhibition in 10 years on Friday, September 30.

The exhibition was a celebration of the many varied items that members of the group have produced over the years, from cushions and bags to wall-hangings and quilts of all sizes, showing a mixture of hand and machine sewing techniques.

It was part of Westbury Festival, which ran in the town from September 23 to October 8.

Westbury Quilters chairman Suzanne Pickup said: “We’re very pleased with how it went.

“It was very successful and that’s all thanks to the committee, who worked extremely hard in the build-up.

“We had over 300 exhibits on show from 40 group members which is a tremendous effort.

“Altogether we had over 200 people viewing the exhibits on the day and lots of them commented on how nice everything looked.”

Westbury Quilters grew from a small group of needle workers in the 1980s to the popular group which now meets monthly at Leigh Park Community Centre.

Group members exchange ideas on patchwork and quilting and introduce new techniques with invited afternoon speakers or tutors on workshops.

Committee member Ali Huntley said: “It’s a great group to get involved with because we’re all very friendly and there’s lots of free tea and cake to go around.

“We’re made up of different abilities and specialities and there’s always someone on hand to help.”

Meetings take place on the last Tuesday of the month from 1.30 to 4.30pm.
