WESTBURY Shed has big plans for the winter months and hopes to build on from the success of its summer allotment sessions.

The group has asked Westbury Area Board for a grant of £984 to enable their allotment site to carry on into winter by offering twice weekly winter garden allotment sessions by installing new infrastructure.

Westbury Shed chairman Dan Gmaj said: “We faced a dilemma in that people who regularly attended the allotment sessions, who have gained many health benefits from being involved in our outdoor project, faced the possibility of this tailing off over the winter.

“With less natural daylight and the resulting lowering of natural vitamin D that exacerbates SAD syndrome for many in the winter, including some existing members, Westbury Shed wants to offer a chance to maximise outdoor activity for existing members and newcomers to the group, so project winter garden was conceived.

“We will be erecting a polytunnel with raised internal beds and a seed tray system to bring on seedlings over the winter and will be maximising light exposure potential within the design with use of reflective surfaces and light diffusing polyurethane.”

Westbury Shed will offer these sessions to its members every Wednesday and Saturday Morning for a £2 voluntary contribution and the afternoons on these days will be spent at their new workshop in Westbury.
