AN elderly woman was conned into paying two men to clear some leaves in her garden after they knocked on her door at around 10.30am on Friday, November 18.

The woman, who lives in Jubilee Close, Westbury, refused their offer at first but they were insistent and made her agree to pay them.

A police spokesperson said: “Beware, not all burglars have to break and enter.

“Burglars won't go to the trouble of breaking in if they can just knock and be invited in. So always be on your guard when anyone you're not expecting turns up at your door.

“Crooks come in many disguises; it could be a man, a woman or even a child.

“These bogus officials may be smartly dressed and claim to be from the council, gas or electricity board, health authority or other organisation.”

Police advise to ring the police if a person is unsure who is at their door and to seek advice from an independent source.

They also advise against signing anything on the spot.
