STAFF at Westbury Leigh C of E Primary School help their pupils look to the future, providing them with technological learning resources to aid their education.

The school in Sandalwood Road welcomes 394 pupils through its doors across its classrooms, with each child taught under the school’s motto Inspire, Aspire, Achieve, helping the pupils strive for excellence.

Nicky Newbury, assistant head of the school and head of IT, said: “Our IT department is the main thing in the school, it is the main facility we have spent our budget on. The idea is to give them the experience to be in the 21st century.”

The school teaches the children to edit film and use green screen technology, which sees the pupils use computers to superimpose images onto a background, from very early on.

“We use iPads with iMovies that the children have used to make a film where they wrote the script themselves and composed music, and that is just our Year 5s. Our Year 2s have been working with green screen and creating reports on Antarctica so it makes it look like they are there,” said Mrs Newbury.

The school aims to instil ethics and respect into its pupils during their time at Westbury Leigh.

“We teach the children courage, respect and responsibility and reward them for their behaviour with gems that match the colour of the value.

"We are a church school so we do teach the importance of Christianity but we also teach other religions as Westbury is a diverse place. Our PE ethos is also strong, the children run every week - fit bodies, fit minds. We have 18 teachers at the school and two classes per year group,” added Mrs Newbury.

As well as the curriculum, the school also provides an extensive range of clubs for the pupils to join, most of them available for all year groups.

“There are 15 different clubs at the school, we do parkour, hockey, computing, dance and more. We also hold a club called Tribe which is a drop-off and pick-up service for the parents, they come in at 7am and can stay until 6pm in the evening. It is a very vibrant school,” Mrs Newbury said.
