A PARISH councillor from Edington has launched a community project to encourage people to remember the history of the village by creating a tapestry.

Sandie Lewis, who started the project, first had the idea around 18 months ago when she visited Bayeux in France to view their tapestry, and her husband suggested she create an Ethandum themed one.

After sharing her idea with friends in the village, seven groups volunteered to make a panel for the tapestry, each one with a different theme relating to the history of Edington.

Panels currently being worked on are based on the priory, the brewery, the old railway and three daggers pub.

Mrs Lewis said: "Although there is only one panel that is finished at the moment, our work is looking lovely and really coming together.

"We have great fun making the panels, it is a very social thing to do and you do make a lot of friends.

"You don't have to be an expert in sewing to take part, everyone has their own strengths that they can bring to the project.

"We have had all ages taking part, from children to our oldest volunteer who is 95.

"It is a great way to get involved with the community and remember the history of our village."

Local schools have also gotten involved with the project, and pupils at Holy Trinity C of E Primary Academy in Great Cheverell have finished their panel which is based on King Alfred the Great and the battle of Ethandun.

Mrs Lewis said: "It's great that the school have benefitted from the this project, as it is an educational topic.

"They got involved through their headteacher, Mrs Henning who also lives in Edington.

"They were the first group to finish their panel.

"I am thinking that the whole tapestry will take about a year to complete, and people can still get involved.

"We would love more people from outside Edington, in the surrounding areas to join us, anyone who is interested, the more the better."

The group will be hosting a workshop on April 28 for anyone who may be interested in joining the project.

If you would like to get involved, please email Mrs Lewis on sandielewis@live.co.uk before hand.

Plans will be made to display the finished tapestry somewhere in the village when it is near completion.
